Each summer since 2016 the Department of Defense has sponsored student discovery sail programs in partnership with the Inland Seas Education Association.  These trips are taken out of the Hessel Marina in the Les Cheneaux Islands.

Go For Launch!

Students learning from astronaut Tony Antonelli at the summer 2024 Go For Launch! program at Lake Superior State University.  Go For Launch! is a multiday program (not overnight) that uses Space Exploration as a platform to launch student involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), STEAM (Art), teamwork, communication and leadership. This program was developed to reach high school-aged students.

About Us

MiSTEM unites a diverse group of education, business, and community leaders from across the state to inspire the upcoming wave of innovators. Our collaborative efforts are dedicated to equipping learners for the critical, sought-after professions of tomorrow.

Functioning under the umbrella of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, the MiSTEM Network and MiSTEM Advisory Council collaborate both at the state and community levels. Their shared mission is to promote STEM education in PK-12, expand the reach of STEM opportunities, and drive experiential 3P learning beyond traditional classroom settings.

October 24th was Manufacturing Day, and 9th grade students from across the Eastern Upper Peninsula participated in the event. More than 300 students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities with 6 different manufacturing companies and the LSSU engineering department. Cloverland Electric, Precision Edge, Carmeuse, Highline, Louisiana Pacific, and TN Michigan were speaking to the students about the various careers in manufacturing.
